Oak Park Ice Arena's ice resurfacer is a 1990's Zamboni brand Model  552.

Delivered to Oak Park in the mid '90's, the 552 is a four wheel drive, electrically powered ice resurfacer, producing zero emissions.

How does the Zamboni resurface the ice?

A) As the Zamboni drives across the ice, a steel razor blade scrapes off a small layer of the ice and removes any loose snow.

B) The shaved ice and snow are moved by the horizontal auger to the center of the Conditioner (the big box thing on the ice under the driver's seat), where it is pushed into the vertical auger.

C) The vertical auger lifts the snow up and pushes it into the (D) Dump-tank.

D) The Dump-tank holds around 100 cubic feet of snow and shaved ice, and is emptied after each resurfacing.

E) While the snow and ice is being removed, a 192 gallon water tank (E) supplies water to the rear of the Zamboni, where it is spread out evenly by the resurfacing towel (F) to quickly freeze and add a new layer of ice onto the rink surface.
